As pointed out by Swift herself during her fan's Secret Sessions, the album starts off as breaking out of her reputation, moving away from the traditional Swift and into a newer, bolder and fiercer Swift, before reaching an understanding towards the end of the album. Although singing about a supposed love story, the song has been confirmed by Swift herself to be about the media’s relationship with her image. According to a Tumblr fan theory Swift liked, the song “illuminates how media/society have so tirelessly tried to absolutely sabotage Taylor Swift’s soul, ravage her kind disposition and quite overtly vandalise her reputation.”
